Wolter wins 10k as Panthers clash at Dartmouth
Peter Wolter won Friday’s 10k at Dartmouth Carnival.
The Middlebury Nordic Ski Team kicked off the Dartmouth Carnival on Friday, finishing fourth after the opening day of competition. In the men’s 10 k classic, Panther Peter Wolter won his race, leading a group of three Nordic skiers who finished in the top eight. The Big Green leads the field with 14 programs with 247 points, followed by Vermont (203), the University of New Hampshire (202) and Middlebury (178). The Panther Alpine team competed in an individual NCAA Qualifying Slalom event and will return to the Dartmouth Skiway on Saturday for a second day of racing that will count towards the Dartmouth Carnival score, while the Nordic team will compete in the 10k freestyle at the Ski Center at Oak Hill.
In the men’s 10km classic, Middlebury put in a very strong performance, led by Wolter’s best time of 28:06.5, finishing 35 seconds ahead of second. Sam Hodges finished the course in 29:02.3 to place sixth, while Willson Moore crossed the finish line two places later with a time of 29:14.6.
In the women’s 5 km, Avery Ellis was the first to finish Panther with a time of 17:56.0 to place 20th. Anja Jensen took 36th place in 18:38.2, while Charlotte Oden was 38th (18:42.0).
At the Skiway, Mika-Anne Reha was the first Middlebury athlete to cross the finish line, taking fifth place in a two-run time of 1:35.88. Lucia Bailey was 13th in 1:37.04, while Sophia Yubero was 15th (1:37.18).
Axel Bailey cracked the top 20 on the men’s side, completing his two strips on the mountain in 1:43.71 to place 19th. Holden Parazette finished 33rd with a time of 1:46.81. The other three Middlebury skiers did not finish their first run.
