Three of women’s lacrosse made IWLCA All-American list
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Three members of the Wesleyan women’s lacrosse team – offense Olivia Lai ’23, defender Indigo Pellegrini de Paur ’21 and midfielder Kate Balicki ’23 — were named 2022 Division III All-Americans this afternoon, as announced by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). All-American honors are a first for Lai and Balicki while Pellegrini de Paur was a 2021 first-team selection, giving him two first-team All-American honors to end his career.
Lai, the 2022 NESCAC Rookie of the Year and All-Region First-Team winner, engineered the Wesleyan offense all season, finishing the campaign with 63 goals and eight assists for 71 points in 19 games. She is only the second Cardinal in program history (Abby Manning ’20 in 2019 – 69 goals) to score 60+ goals in a single season. Lai has scored four goals in 11 of 19 games and recorded 16 hat-tricks in the 2022 season. She even added 32 ground balls (2n/a in the team) and 23 caused turnovers (3rd on the team).
Pellegrini de Paur made a clean sweep, with first-team All-NESCAC, All-Region, and now All-American honors in his graduation season. She finished the season as the team leader in draft checks (59) and ground balls (34) while ranking second in turnovers caused (30). His 59 draw checks are the fourth-highest single-season total in program history. Pellegrini de Paur joins an elite group as she is only the third Cardinal in team history to earn multiple All-America honors.
Balicki redefined her role within the team and became one of the centerpieces of Cardinal midfield throughout the season. She provided plenty of offense, ranking second on the team in goals (40) and fourth in points (53) in 19 games. Balicki finished second among NESCAC midfielders in goals and points while third in assists.
