Six Cardinals Named IWLCA All-Region
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Six members of the Wesleyan women’s lacrosse team were honored by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) today when the organization announced its 2022 Division III All-Region teams. list was Berkshire area first team selections Indigo Pellegrini de Paur ’21, Erin Trotta ’23, Olivia Lai ’23, Kate Balicki ’23 and Laura Baine ’24 while Gil Horst ’23 earned second-team honors. It’s the second time that Pellegrini de Paur, Baine and Horst have won All-Region selection while Trotta, Lai and Balicki earn this recognition for the first time in their respective careers. Wesleyan has now seen at least six All-Region nominees for four straight seasons, dating back to 2018.
Pellegrini de Paur is a first-team all-area winner for the second time in her career as the graduate defender leads the team in both draw checks (59) and ground balls (34) while occupying the second place in turnovers caused in 16 games played. Since draw checks were tracked individually at Wesleyan in 2007, Pellegrini de Paur’s 59 is the fourth-highest single-season total in program history.
After earning second-team all-region honors in 2021, Baine is a first-team selection in 2022 as she ranks second on the team in points (60) and assists (25) while she has the third most goals (35) coming in at the weekend. The 2021 NESCAC Rookie of the Year has amassed 76 career points (46 goals, 31 assists) in 24 career appearances.
Being part of the first team in all regions as a defenseman is Trotta who has been the catalyst for one of the best defenses in the country all season, leading the team with 34 turnovers while adding 29 balls on the ground ( third most on the team). His 34 turnovers are just a step away from a new program record in a season.
Lai, the 2022 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, has led the Cardinal offense all season, posting 60 goals and 68 points heading into this weekend. She is only the second Cardinal in program history (Abby Manning ’20 in 2019 – 69 goals) to reach the 60-goal milestone in a single season. She has scored at least four goals in 11 out of 18 games this season.
Balicki has provided plenty of offense in a new role this season as she ranks second on the team with 39 goals while adding 13 assists for 52 points in 18 games. She is second among all NESCAC midfielders in goals and points while she is third in assists.
The third two-time Cardinal selection for all regions is Horst, as the junior midfielder was a first-team selection in 2021 and a second-team selection this season. A true two-way midfielder, Horst has contributed 18 goals as she is an impressive 7-for-8 on shots from the free position this season. Horst also has 25 draft checks, 14 ground balls and seven forced turnovers in 18 games.
Wesleyan heads for big weekend as Cardinals travel to Gettysburg for NCAA 3 neutral siterd round robin match against No. 5 ranked Washington & Lee Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The winner of this match will advance to the quarter-final round on Sunday.
