Olivia Lai earns IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week honors
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Olivia Lai of the Wesleyan Women’s Lacrosse Team was named by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) as the Division III National Offensive Player of the Week for her performances in games against then No. 13 Hamilton and Williams on 20 and April 23.
The NESCAC leading scorer had five goals and an assist, matching her career high with six points in the two games last week. Starting with an 18-8 victory over Hamilton, Lai scored five times, setting a new career high, with two of her goals coming on shots from free position while she added a ground ball and an a caused a turnaround in the victory against the Continentals. Lai’s five goals came from just six shot attempts.
Following that performance with an identical stat line (five goals, one assist) that gave the Cardinals another 18-8 win, this time over Williams on Saturday, Lai ended his 12-point week in stellar fashion. Lai’s fifth goal against the Ephs scored him the 50and of the season, as the junior offense became just the third Cardinal in program history to hit the 50-goal mark in a single season. His six points also helped Wesleyan earn a Little 3 title and the most goals the Cardinals have ever scored against Williams.
Named NESCAC Co-Player of the Week on Monday, Lai becomes the second Cardinal in program history to win the IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week award. She joins Abby Horst ’19 who became the first Cardinal to win the honor in the 2019 campaign.
Wesleyan is 11-3 overall and 6-3 at NESCAC this spring heading into his regular season finale at Conn. College Wednesday night.
