Mikel Arteta and Arsenal transfer priority Edu after £ 150million spending spree revealed
Arsenal were busy in the summer transfer window and some fans are demanding more business be done this month.
Bringing Aaron Ramsdale, Martin Odegaard, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Benjamin White to the club, the Gunners were the big spenders in the Premier League with a spend of around £ 150million.
But what does Arsenal have in store for the January transfer window?
Well, with Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny set to be down for potentially up to a month due to the Africa Cup of Nations, central midfielder is one area manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu can consider strengthening.
With a brace in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool, a North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur, a draw in the FA Cup third round against Nottingham Forest and Burnley’s visit to the Emirates Stadium before the end of the month, it’s definitely going to be a busy time for the North London outfit.
And with Partey and Elneny possibly absent for those aforementioned games, coupled with Ainsley Maitland-Niles being linked with a move to AS Roma, calls for reinforcements in the midfield are growing louder.
As a result, some Gunners fans believe that Arteta and Edu’s main transfer assignment in January should be a central midfielder who can replace Granit Xhaka in the long run.
The Switzerland international looked set to leave Arsenal this summer as personal terms between the midfielder and Roma had been agreed, but the sticking point was the midfielder’s price of ⬠20m (£ 17m sterling).
Perhaps coincidentally since returning from a knee injury last month, the Gunners’ results and performance have improved.
However, Xhaka had a moment to forget against Manchester City on Saturday afternoon as it was his fault on Bernardo Silva that resulted in a penalty for the visitors and Riyad Mahrez converted him to level them up.
While Xhaka’s overall performance wasn’t too bad, this moment stuck on the minds of many Arsenal supporters.
And among links to figures including Bruno Guimaraes, Georginio Wijnaldum, Renato Sanches and Mattias Svanberg, it has been suggested that Arteta and Edu seek to use the January window to leave Xhaka.

@ AndrewKang1601 said: “Bruno Guimaraes is the perfect replacement for Xhaka. Can play alongside Partey like Xhaka did yesterday to counter City’s two eights, and can push higher as a second eight against weaker teams. Fits well into the 235 structure. “
