Fabrizio Romano has claimed Arsenal maintain an interest in Lucas Paqueta, and Edu Gaspar has been in contact with the Lyon star’s agent, but a transfer is not likely to happen at the moment.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for the Brazil international in recent weeks. It was claimed last week that he was a player Mikel Arteta ‘really wants’ at the Emirates before the transfer window closes.

Arsenal have had an impressive summer so far. Marquinhos, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Gabriel Jesus have all entered, while Oleksandr Zinchenko is just a few formalities away from becoming Gunner.

On paper, the North Londoners don’t really need Paqueta, which is why a transfer isn’t close to happening at the moment. However, Romano claimed there was interest and that Edu had been in touch with the Lyon midfielder’s agent.

If there’s one man who knows about almost every big transfer that happens in Europe, it’s Romano.

The journalist has now shared what he has heard about the rumors linking Paqueta with a move to the Emirates.

He said GiveMeSport: “At the moment, there is nothing close for Arsenal.

“There is interest because Edu, of course, with his Brazilian connection, knows the players so well and had contact with his agent but never submitted a proposal.”

Do they even need him?

Lucas Paqueta is an exceptional footballer, there’s no debating that.

The Brazilian, described as ‘extraordinary’ by Peter Bosz, scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions last season. He is brilliant on the ball, can create and score goals and has the ability to play as a number 10 as well as in central midfield.

He would be a good player for many Premier League clubs, but Arsenal may not need him anymore.

The Gunners already have Martin Odegaard and Emile Smith Rowe, while new boy Fabio Vieira can play in attacking midfield, on the wings and as a number eight. He’s a great talent, and if all goes to plan he will be a great player for Arsenal.

To add to that, Zinchenko is set to enter as well. The Ukrainian can play in central midfield and left-back, while Arteta himself revealed today that he started as a ‘natural number 10’. That should be enough for Arsenal for the new season, but football is a fun game, and Edu could still make a move for Paqueta towards the end of the window.
