Edu can use Lucas Torreira’s clever trick to secure Arsenal successor Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Chris Davison
Let’s face it, the striker’s current situation at Arsenal is not going to be resolved and no one knows exactly when clarity will appear.
The future of Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah is no clearer than it was a few months ago, but the club now find themselves in a new unwanted saga with former club captain Pierre. -Emerick Aubameyang.
Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed on Friday morning that the 32-year-old Gabon international will not be available for Saturday’s clash with Leeds United following his latest disciplinary offense which has earned him the captain’s armband. This leaves more uncertainty around his Gunners career.
Even before the latest development with Auba, it was believed that Arsenal were on the hunt for a new striker ahead of the summer transfer window. It remains to be seen if last week made this a more pressing issue, but things certainly don’t sound very good behind the walls of London Colney in this particular case.
Identifying the ‘perfect’ person for Arsenal’s next striker will of course be the most difficult part for the recruiting team, however, Edu may seek to exploit the bonds and connections that one of the club’s own players has. in order to increase the probability a transfer target.
It’s easy to forget that Lucas Torreira is still our player, although it’s clear he doesn’t have a long-term future in the Emirates. The midfielder is on loan in Italy with Serie A team Fiorentina after a stint at Atletico Madrid last season.
Not only does this mean that Arsenal have a relatively positive relationship and understanding with both clubs, but it also means that Torreira can play an important agent role as well. Look at it as a leaving gift!
The Gunners have been linked with a move for Portugal’s Joao Felix, who currently plays under Diego Simeone. The 22-year-old made a whopping £ 114million transfer to La Liga in 2019, but has struggled to reflect his price since.
As we have also seen with Thomas Lemar for example, fitting into Simeone’s system and playstyle is not always an easy task for players and in some scenarios it can dampen their full potential.
Felix has managed to make just 89 appearances in just over two years for Atletico, scoring 20 goals and providing 11 assists.
If Felix thinks a new chapter is needed, Edu could put Torreira in the role of persuading his ex-teammate that Arsenal would be the right choice for him, with the duo having a good friendship after playing together last season. Arteta is building an exciting young and talented squad in the Emirates, so Felix would apparently be a perfect candidate.
Meanwhile, Torreira can also work on behalf of Arsenal’s technical director at Fiorentina. It’s been widely reported that we’re looking at their star man, Dusan Vlahovic, who ends up in searing form.
The 21-year-old Serbian has scored 17 goals in 19 appearances so far this season, which has caused many European clubs to keep an eye out.
Vlahovic’s contract situation also put potential suitors on high alert after it became clear that he would not be signing a new deal with the Italian side.
Joe Barone, the club’s general manager, told Repubblica: “We have offered Vlahovic the highest contract in Fiorentina history, on several occasions. Dusan and his agent have made it clear to us that they do not want to not accept. Our offer is still on the table. “
Sky Sport Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio reported that Arsenal had contacted Fiorentina over the striker’s signing, but his representatives declined to take the phone to discuss a move to north London.
Although the situation seems unlikely to change, Torreira could once again seek to turn heads and convince his current teammate that he should re-evaluate his next destination.
It would be a major blow for Arsenal, who would have one of the fittest players in the game at their disposal.
Agent Lucas, at work!
