Cal Poly Women’s Chorus and Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble to Present ‘Slavic Sounds’ Concert May 7 – Cal Poly News

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Women’s Chorus and Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble will perform a concert titled “Slavic Sounds” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 7 at First Presbyterian Church in San Luis Obispo.

The Cal Poly Women’s Chorus will begin the program with repertoire in various styles and genres, including arrangements of traditional Cuban and Latvian folk songs and pieces with a message of social justice.

The special guest ensemble Kitka will perform selections from a variety of cultures and languages, as well as arrangements of traditional folk music from Bulgaria and the greater Eastern European region.

Kitka is a small professional ensemble with deep ties to the Balkan, Slavic and Caucasian lands. Its members have performed, taught, and conducted cultural exchange activities in Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Macedonia, Poland, Serbia, Turkey, and Ukraine, as well as in communities across the United States, Canada, and beyond.

The concert will end with several Eastern European folk songs performed by the two groups.

The Cal Poly Women’s Chorus is led by Director of Choral Activities Scott Glysson and accompanied by accompanist Paul Woodring.

Tickets are $20 for public and $10 for students and are sold at the Cal Poly box office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849).
